Down time

A tree branch or something fell on a power line and we lost power for about an hour. I used my down time to sit on the front porch and watch for power company trucks. A herd of 6 deer came through the woods and across my driveway.

My latest commissioned house portrait. The house is in southern California somewhere. I love the Spanish architecture. Love the colors. It was fun to paint.

My Grandfather and Me

I recently came across this photo of me at about age 20 with my grandfather, Carroll Waddell. What a treasure he was and I sure do miss him. He taught me so much about art and photography and graphics.

The first 2 milestones of a new landscape. Having fun with this one but taking my time with it as well. I’m emphasizing blocks of color more than any details. At least trying to. Everybody knows I always pack in a lot of detail.

Children’s Book

In my other life, I’m a graphic designer and illustrator. I recently illustrated a children’s picture book for Joyce Miller. It will start shipping on May 1. It was a lot of fun and I look forward to illustrating another children’s book.

Old sketch

Came across this old sketch while clearing out piles of stuff today. I brightened it up in Photoshop but it was ballpoint pen on cheap yellowed sketch paper. It was probably 1995 and the spur of the moment. All I had was a ballpoint pen and a cheap sketch pad. Or lined notebook paper. I chose cheap sketch pad. There was a time when made sketches like this by the dozens. Thinking about doing that again. When I was in high school I would go to the Houston zoo and sit by the entrance and sketch people as they came into the zoo. Wonder what ever happened to those??

I’ve taken an interest in painting rural landscapes. I’ve only painted a few in my lifetime. They are a challenge for me. This one is a place in Texas that I consider to be really beautiful. I pass it on my way to see my in-laws.

Christmas where I live

The annual Christmas Parade in Magnolia, Texas took place this morning and of course Santa was there. We had a great time.
